Part-Time and Adjunct Appointments

Appointees are required to maintain in good standing their hospital privileges and/or license or membership with a relevant regulatory authority (if applicable).

There will be some part time academic appointments which are made for research and/or administrative purposes. These appointments will have defined research/administrative expectations which will be mutually agreed upon in advance between the appointee and the department chair/vice-dean.

Faculty members who will contribute less than 100 hours annually may be eligible for appointment as an assistant clinical professor (adjunct) or lecturer (adjunct).

Part-time faculty who contribute in excess of 270 hours of educational activities for a sustained period may be eligible to apply for a bursary for their dependents or spouse. Full details regarding eligibility for bursary can be found in the Policy for Tuition Bursary Program for Dependents and Spouses (PDF).

Appointments are renewable in increments of up to three years. Additionally, part-time faculty members are eligible for promotion through the ranks

Adjunct Appointments

Although commonly referred to as adjunct appointments, these appointments are actually specific ranks within the Faculty of Health Sciences part-time appointment category.

Part-time appointments at the rank of assistant clinical professor (adjunct) or lecturer (adjunct) are granted to recognize academic contributions within the Faculty of Health Sciences. The use of the term ‘adjunct’ implies that the expected educational commitment of the individual faculty member is less than that of a person appointed as an assistant clinical professor or lecturer (part-time).

Expectations of Part-Time (Adjunct) Faculty

Faculty members appointed to an adjunct rank are expected to provide a minimum of 150 weighted hours of educational contributions over a three-year period.

The specific educational contributions will be mutually agreed upon in advance between the appointee and the department chair (or delegate). Appointees are required to maintain in good standing their hospital privileges and/or license or membership with a relevant regulatory authority (if applicable).

Appointments are renewable in increments of up to three years. Information on the renewal process can be found in the current faculty section.
